Designed in 1913 by Alliston and Weinstein, brushes were originally named “fly
killers” and looked very much like they do today. Although we don’t know who first used them
on the drum set, we do know that they likely rose to popularity in the New Orleans jazz bands
of the early 1900s.
Over time, drummers developed a personalized approach to brush language, establishing
certain grooves, techniques, and patterns that could be used to accompany a wide range of
musical styles. Many of these patterns were taught by rote, passed down from one drummer to
the next, or from teacher to student. In fact, there are numerous stories of famous drummers
who, while on tour, would meet up with other drummers to trade “brush licks” while hanging
out in their hotel rooms, playing on tables, chairs, or even pizza boxes! This idea was the
inspiration for “Brush Hour” which is built around grooves, themes, and “licks” that are traded
between each player in the ensemble. -- Alex Stopa

Cocomelon!
Is this exercise help us to control our hands? How much should we do this exercise before we could start playing the rhythm? Sorry for my stupid question!
This is a great question! Yes, this exercise is designed to help build coordination between the hands. Most people are either right hand or left hand dominant. We want to develop stick control in both hands. It's really important to be able to play evenly. A good rule of thumb when working through a method book is to spend five days on an exercise, practicing it 5 times a day (total of 25 times spread over a five day period) then move on to the next thing. So to answer your question, spend at least a week on these then move on to the next challenge.
@@EliseoRael Thanks so much! I can play on my right hand easily, but my left hand so weird every time I strike the drums even though I have played some march drum when I was a teenager. I think at least it takes a month for me to get used to with my left hand.
❤
This video was a long time ago. As was the last comments. So illm just commenting bere to say this is still helping many people in luding myself today and i am over the moon i got this in my sight as assistance for the future. Thanks so much and please continue to create drum related videos. Your style of teaching is incredibly understanding and accommodating to many peoples styles of learning. Please do more like this. So good. Thank you. 🥁

This is my ringtone and just really wanted to hear this
The first one I played on time with you. This one I was lost 35% of time. Especially while you were raising tempo
Thanks for your comment @Erdelitte . Don't get discouraged. It takes time to build speed. If you want to get faster quicker, try doing the video (as much of it as you can) 3 times a day. Do it once in the morning, once in the middle of the day, and once at night. I guarantee that after doing that for 5 days you'll be able to play much more of the video than you can now.
@@EliseoRael tnx dude.... I left drumming 25 years ago....too bad, I really had the talent. I'll get quicker in time no doubt but what you're doing here is great TY
Drums for some reason came really natural for me. The first time I sat at a drum kit I was able to play basic beats and 10 mins later did my first tom fill. I played snare drum in band in 6th grade (1998) so I knew basic sticking at least. Anyways, I never practiced and am self taught. Which means I kinda suck especially since my kit was packed away for 8 years, so I'm starting from scratch and going back to a single pedal. This is going to help immensely, thank you. I didn't realize how important it is to always practice with a metronome. I had been speeding through my fills and never noticed.
Wow you are gifted.
this is too much for my little poop brain
Don't give up! You can always slow the video down if it's too fast. Try it for 5 days and it should get easier each day. Good luck!
@@EliseoRael ty :)
lol this is the easiest stuff ever.. people actually watch this?
Hi drummer6276, thanks for your comment. I'm glad you've advanced to a level where you can play this video with ease. It is meant as the very first lesson for someone who has never played before. If you'd like a challenge, try pausing the screen and playing each exercise at a faster tempo. Try doing it as softly as possible. Do it with crec and dim. Try adding accents and moving them around to different parts of the beat. Use it as a four mallet independence exercise. Creativity can turn a simple exercise into hours of fun.
Wow
I have a name! Maybe its gonna be called "The Tune Forest"
